Instructions and FAQs

Why use this tool?

Provide clients with credible money management information and advice

Sometimes newcomers have money management questions that may go beyond your knowledge as a settlement worker. When this occurs, the Money Management Tool for Newcomers provides credible up-to-date information on a range of money related topics. The tool is easy to navigate. Simply select the relevant topic or topics from the Settlement Workers Toolkit page and a list of questions will appear to help guide you. This information can be used as a reference for conversation or as a teaching aid.

Once you assess the information your client needs you can create an information package or pass on the information verbally without ever creating a package.

Create customized packages to meet your clients’ needs

No two newcomers are the same. They each have specific needs based on where they’re at in their settlement. While one client may have questions around options for saving money or managing credit, another client may want to know how to choose a bank or the different ways they can access money. The Settlement Workers Toolkit lets you build a customized package to address a specific need or provide clarification on a complex issue.

Create an information archive

Occasionally, a newcomer may want to access information on a range of topics. For example, they may want to reference information to support family and friends who have financial questions. In these instances, you can store an information package or multiple packages on behalf of your client. Information packages should only be stored on the client’s request.

While some clients may want to access large amounts of information at once, we recommend saving a number of smaller customized information packages. Larger packages with too much information can be overwhelming and discourage learning.

Packages can be accessed up to one year after creation.

Please note that you will need to set up a user account to create your information archive.

Click the checkboxes next to the relevant subtopics to include them in your custom information package. Once you are done selecting all the desired subtopics click the "Up" button on the right side of the page to scroll up to create a PDF. Registered users can opt to click “Save” at this point.

Create a client profile

Once you have registered as a user, you can create a client profile by entering a unique identifier in the “Client Reference” box on the right-hand side of the Settlement Workers Toolkit page.

Try to use an identifier that is easy to lookup and is traceable to the client (e.g. “JohnSmith” vs “js3425”). If possible use the client’s first and last name.

Click “Save”.

Search for an existing client

To search for all packages created for an existing or past client, click on “My Clients” on the main menu bar (top-right). Here you can manage all existing or past clients and their information packages.

Enter the Client Reference in the “My Client” field box, set the appropriate date parameters and click “Apply Filter”.

The specific Topics and Subtopics for each package will be displayed under “Client” (located under “My Clients”).

Find the desired information package and click the corresponding “Download”1 under the “PDF” column to download the specific PDF.

Edit an existing information package

Information packages can only be edited on the day they are created. Packages created prior to the creation date can be downloaded, however are locked and cannot be edited.

Once you have selected the package you’d like to edit, click “Edit”2. This will load the information package with all the selected topics and subtopics that you checked for the client during that session.

From here you can either change the subtopics related to the package, or you can download or email the package.

Create a new information package

You can create an entirely new package under the same Client Reference.

On the far right, click “Go”3 located under the column titled, “New”. Any “Go” will do as long as it is in the row with the correct Client Reference.

This will load the “Welcome to the Settlement Worker’s Toolkit!” page with the client’s Client Reference already filled in. Select the topics as needed.

Alternatively, if you remember the client’s Client Reference, you can create a new document directly from the “Welcome to the Settlement Worker’s Toolkit!” page by entering the same Client Reference when saving the information package.

A message will appear alerting you that the client reference already exists. Click “Ok” to continue.
